Week 5 reflection chapter 10

Week 5 reflection chapter 10

I hope first of all that I live to see an older age. If I'm blessed to see an older age I hope to be in my right mind, and living in a good environment. Chapter 10 teaches me that it would be in my best interest to start preparing for my future. IM hoping that I don't have to live in a nursing home. The majority of nursing home residents have disabling mental health conditions, such as depression, Alzheimer's disease or a history of mental illness. As a result, many nursing home residents present behavior problems, such as agitation, abusiveness, or wandering. Nursing home care presents an increasing challenge for staff, family, and residents alike. Virtually all of us are either directly or indirectly affected by nursing home care. The question remains are all homes as bad as we imagine them to be, or is a bad nursing home relative rare.

  1. When I read this chapter it made me feel the same way it made you feel. I am looking forward to the aging process and I am not afraid of it. Nursing homes today are more like a resort than anything. They are a place of safety, fun, living, and relaxing area of the elderly to stay and live throughout the remainder of their life times. It is a great feeling knowing that there are so many options and different places to live based on life styles, areas, activities, and much more. This chapter was my favorite as well and made me feel more comfortable with the nursing home process. Thank you for sharing!

  2. Charlene,
It is not the nursing homes that are bad, it is the people working in them that are bad and make living in them unwelcome. If the families of the patients (not all of them are elderly with disabling mental problems) would visit on a regular basis to make sure they are getting the services they need, then the patients would have a better stay wherever they are placed. Many times people place their relatives in nursing homes and other convalescent homes and forget about them and expect the staff at the facility to provide everything they need. The staff at any facility cannot provide the kind of love and support that family can.
