I chose to review chapter 7, Intimacy and Sexuality. This
chapter covers the need for intimacy, marital statuses, sexual relationships
and sexuality, and improving attitudes about aging and sexuality. I believe this
is an significant chapter for all. We will not always be in our twenties, long
hair, tanned, skinny, and looking to have fun. Just because our bodies age doesn’t
mean that we lose the desire for intimacy and relationships. This chapter talks
about how marriage and how that long term relationship can have positive
effects on the aging individuals health and well being, however as they age
they often experience the death of a spouse and have to find a way to recover
from this. There are many different organizations in a community that provide
social networks and outreach programs to help these individuals. Some find
friendships and others find a new partner
or mate. Sexuality has changed though out generations. “The sexuality of
older people is largely invisible. This is partly because for many older
people, sex and sexuality are intensely private matters” (Hiller and Barrow,
2011). Verses today where our generation is more open with sex and sexuality.
When viewing media there are many sexual scenes, however they are mostly of
young couples. Despite what younger
generations believe aging does not mean loss of intimacy, love, or sexuality.
We are all sexual beings and we continue to be through out our lives.
