Chapter 4: Physical Health & Well-Being

Aging is steady process that begins at birth and continues throughout life (Hillier and Barrow, 2011). As one ages the body will function and it will also have peaks and low points. Normal aging occurs in every human being. According to Hillier and Barrow (2011), “Many changes that take place in the body are observable: the skin loses its elasticity and becomes more wrinkled, the hair grays and thins out, and the body becomes less erect” (pg. 93). Other things that are common are individuals needing reading glasses and becoming more tired.  It is also harder to loose fat because as a person becomes older and to stay physically fit. All of these are normal facts about aging, however chronic conditions are long term and increase with age. As stated in the textbook, chronic condition “are typically unknown but the ultimate cost is profound on health, quality of life, and increased health care expenditures. Hypertension, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and cancers top the frequency list of chronic conditions affecting older adults” (Hillier and Barrow, 2011). These chronic health problems are serious conditions and can speed up the aging process in older adults very quickly. In order to live a long life, individuals must want to live the right way by eating healthy, exercising and thinking positively. As said by Hillier and Barrow (2011) “exercise helps maintain good health, improves circulation and respiration, diminishes dress, preserves a sense of balance, promotes body flexibility, and induces better sleeping patters at any age” (Pg. 111). Along with exercise, a healthy diet and being in a good mental health is the answer to healthy aging.

  1. Very good post. You really summed up the chapter very well and reiterated what needs to be done to be healthy both physically and mentally. There are many things I need to work on. Sometimes I let stress get to me and I need to lose weight. This chapter was a good reminder to the things I need to do to get healthier for now and for my future.

  3. I like how you mentioned the aging effects that you cannot help, such as the wrinkles and loose skin. Many young people have it engraved in their minds that wrinkles are bad and they even start looking for treatments at the age of twenty. This is sad because it is a part of the aging process and there is nothing that can stop it from happening. But one item that you mentioned that can help with tightening the skin is daily exercise. Keeping fit does more than just making you feel good, it makes you look good in return. Along with exercise, eating healthy benefits you as well. Fast food is full of sodium and unsaturated fats. These fats clog arteries and can lead to life threatening issues. Thank you for sharing about wrinkles and loose skin. I did not include that in my blog and wish I did.
