Acute and chronic disorders of the brain including dementia occur in many Americans today and at the present moment there is no know cure. Although dementia usually occurs late in life dementia does not always accompany old age ( Hillier, S.M., Barrow, G.M 2011).It appears as though reducing the risk of developing dementia in late life, is similar to the things you can do to ensure a healthier aging process. Healthy and rich diet, regular exercise, limited use of alcohol, avoidance of environmental hazards, exercising brain and keeping it alert are all ways to lower your risk of mild to moderate forms of dementia. The functions that are healthy for your body's optimum health are also healthy for your brains development. The text also states good mental health in early and middle adulthood can have a profound effect on the mental health of old age. My mother is constantly doing crossword puzzles and for years I used to say don't you ever get tired of searching for word's or get a headache? She always replied "No. Why?' Now that I am an adult and am studying this course I am glad that my mother exercises her brain and have began to do them myself with her. Not only is it good for our brains, but it also gives us a chance to bond and get our minds off of other things that may be stressing us.
